Why Sony is Making the Shift

Sony cited a massive, irreversible shift in customer habits, explaining that digital media sales now drastically outpace physical products. Industry tracking data from firms like Ampere Analysis shows that while digital downloads only made up 13% of PlayStation sales in 2013, they exploded to nearly 80% of all game purchases by recent years. High-profile releases have already signaled this shift, such as Rockstar Games' decision to drop physical discs for its launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Why Gamers Are Pushing Back

The announcement has sparked severe community backlash and major concerns over digital ownership. Because consumers are buying a "license to play" rather than a tangible item, games cannot be shared with friends, resold on the secondhand market, or preserved if Sony decides to take down storefronts. This frustration has been compounded by Sony's concurrent announcement that it will delete hundreds of purchased digital movies from user libraries due to expiring licensing agreements with StudioCanal.
